The story of Carnival is one of achievement against the odds. The Carnival Heritage in Nottingham, since 1958, is the extraordinary story of the community development, relationship and participation. The aim of the project is to celebrate and share the story of the Nottingham Carnival’s heritage and to reinforce the role that the Nottingham Carnival plays in creating community cohesion, harmony and the chance for diverse communities to engage in and learn from heritage.

Why Are Carnival Arts Important?

Carnival arts are well established art forms throughout the region and across the world with vibrant annual carnivals across the UK in Derby, Leicester, Luton, Nottingham, Wellingborough, Spalding, Leeds, Cardiff and London. Carnival lies at the heart of Caribbean artistic culture. As well as being the epitome of live art and street theatre, it is truly a multicultural event. Carnival has a major influence on other contemporary art forms.

Being firmly rooted in African Caribbean culture, carnival is also an excellent way of inspiring pride and self-esteem within young people. Also, its multicultural dimensions embrace everyone uniting them by celebrating cultural harmony.
